When she invited him to go on a date as an apology for the incident, the love-struck firebender gladly accepted. Their relationship hit off immediately and they spent a lot of time together.
While enjoying a romantic carriage ride through Republic City Park , Mako entrusted in Asami that his red scarf was the only memento he still had of his deceased father. After Asami told him that she had lost her mother at a young age as well, they locked in an intimate embrace. Even when training for the big Pro-bending Tournament, Mako made time to go out on dates with Asami, and she was present after every match to congratulate him and the team.
When Korra confessed her true romantic feelings to him, Mako turned her down, using his own romantic relationship with Asami as an excuse. Asami invited Mako and his brother to stay in the Sato estate after the Pro-bending Arena was closed down following the Equalists' attack. When the Satos were investigated on Korra's suspicions, Mako defended Asami against the Avatar, even going so far as threatening to end his friendship with Korra if she continued to berate Asami.
After it was proven that Hiroshi Sato was working with the Equalists, Mako comforted the distraught Asami after taking Korra's advice when they left the Sato estate. Asami confirmed, and they kissed.
However, after hearing of Korra's capture, Mako barely paid any attention to Asami, and she learned from Bolin that Korra and Mako had kissed, making it hard for her to trust him. While he carried Korra in his arms, he bypassed everybody, even Bolin, and focused his attention solely on Korra in that moment, greatly upsetting Asami.
Asami confronting Mako. Having knowledge of Mako and Korra's past relationship and her suspicions confirmed, she became upset and jealous. When confronted about his kiss with Korra and his romantic feelings for the Avatar, Mako looked away guiltily and denied her accusation, stating that his reaction to Korra's capture was justified. Asami was left disappointed and hurt when Mako could not reassure her that she was just imagining things. Feeling betrayed, she ignored Mako and even told him to sit in the back seat of the Satomobile with Korra.
She felt even more marginalized when Mako's attention was focused on Korra after Amon attacked Republic City, despite the fact her boyfriend was aware of how insecure she was feeling. During the battle for Republic City , Mako and Asami separated. However, they appeared to reconcile prior to him leaving with Korra to face Amon, as he told her that he would always care about her. After Asami assumed control of Future Industries, she found herself struggling to turn profits, and shipments of goods to the South were being stolen.
Mako decided to help her find out who was responsible by setting up a sting operation with the Triple Threat Triad. While on the ship, Mako told Asami about he and Korra's split. The firebender soon overheard triad members talking about the operation being a setup, and the two escaped from the ship, barely outrunning triad members in pursuit. They rushed to a warehouse where Asami was keeping all of Future Industries inventory, only to find it had all been stolen.
Mako tried to comfort his downbeat friend, who was ready to give up on everything. Touched by Mako's concern for her and her company, Asami kissed him. Mako quickly pulled away, clearly confused, while Asami apologized. Mako later found out through Two Toed Ping that Varrick was responsible for the act, and rushed to Future Industries to inform Asami, only to find out that she had closed a deal with the industrialist that allowed him to buy majority control of the company, thus saving her and Future Industries.
The firebender reluctantly backed away upon hearing the news. In the days after, Mako and Asami's relationship gradually began to grow more intimate, although they kept it secretive to the outside world, denying any kind of involvement when someone pointed it out.
However, Asami was shocked when Mako was arrested on the charges of robbing the Future Industries' warehouse, and was unable to believe it. Upon this act of affection, Asami glared at Mako, angered by his infidelity. While trying to find Aiwei , a bomb was set off, and Mako shielded Asami from the blast.
Mako and Korra. When Mako first met Korra, he thought she was just another one of Bolin's "crazy fangirls" and practically ignored her. When Bolin went missing, Mako was reluctant at first to accept Korra's help in searching for him, but he eventually complied.
The two got along quite well and when Korra asked about the fate of his parents, Mako felt comfortable to tell her the truth. Later, they fell asleep against each other, and felt embarrassed when they woke up. However, when infiltrating into an Equalist rally , Korra put her arm around Mako's to look more casual, which he only allowed because she stated that they would attract less attention that way.
He also allowed Korra to wear his scarf, which was the only thing he had left of his father. When Bolin asked some time later what Mako thought of Korra as a girlfriend, he thought the question was about him and Korra, and said she was great, but that it made more sense for him to go for Asami.
He took it back when he realized that Bolin meant the question for himself, saying that she was not girlfriend material and he should not date a teammate. That night, Korra confessed her feelings for him after they won the game by saying that she thought they were "meant for each other".
Unsure, Mako gently rejected her and told her that he did not feel the same way and he was with Asami. However, when his girlfriend walked in and he took her to the side, he darted a sad look while eyeing Korra and Bolin glumly after she had accepted to go on a "romantic date" with the earthbender. Mako and Korra irritated with one another after their argument over Mako's feelings for Korra.
After the end of Korra and Bolin's date, Mako confronted Korra and accused her of playing games with Bolin only to get back at him. Both of them glared at one another and stormed away. After a particularly rocky match due to their uneasiness with each other, he went out to talk to Korra and confessed his true feelings by saying while she was "infuriating and drove him crazy", he still thought she was "pretty amazing". However, despite admitting that he had deep feelings for Korra, he also had such feelings for Asami, leaving him confused and unsure of how to handle this.
Korra immediately followed this statement by impulsively kissing him; he was stunned, but kissed her back with equal enjoyment. This moment was disrupted by a heartbroken Bolin, who fled from the scene crying. This led to a quick, heated argument between Korra and Mako. After the pro-bending match, they acknowledged that taking their relationship further was causing friction between them and everyone else, agreeing to for now just maintain a casual friendship, despite their mutual affection for each other.
Mako appeared to be very protective and concerned for Korra's safety throughout the championship match and Amon's sudden attack on the arena, defending her from a three-on-one attack after she was knocked down and asking her to be careful when she set off after Amon during his escape.
After being saved by Chief Beifong from falling to her death from the arena ceiling, he was the first to run over to hug her and told her he was "so glad" she was okay. Mako and Korra 's relationship is strained once again when Korra begins to suspect Hiroshi Sato of being an Equalist. Mako and Korra's relationship hit another snag when Korra began suspecting Asami's father, Hiroshi Sato , of working with the Equalists. Mako threatened to break off his friendship with Korra if she did not drop her investigation against the Satos.
When Korra refused to drop her claim and stated that she was sorry, Mako gave her an angry look and walked away with Asami. When Korra went with Tenzin , Lin Beifong, and members of the Metalbending Police Force to look for Hiroshi's secret factory , he wanted to go with her, but was told to remain with Bolin and Asami, and was watched by a metalbending officer.
Before Korra disappeared down the tunnel, she cast a sad look back at Mako. He looked down out of guilt and shame because of accusing her of formulating lies and threatening to end their friendship earlier. Mako heard the platinum wall close, and with Bolin, he cleverly tricked the metalbender cop watching the three of them by sneezing out fire. The three made their way underground to save the investigating party.
Mako and Bolin found Korra and the others unconscious, about to be taken to Amon on Hiroshi's orders. The brothers attempt to get them to safety. While Bolin went to get Tenzin, Mako made his way to Korra, hoisted her onto his back, and started to help his brother drag Chief Beifong, but they were discovered by Hiroshi and some Equalists.
It was only when Asami intervened, electrocuting her father with a glove which allowed them to escape to the police airship. On board the airship, making their way to the Republic City coast, Mako apologized to Korra and admitted that she was right. Korra accepted the apology and invited Mako, Bolin, and Asami to live on Air Temple Island in addition to advising him to comfort his girlfriend in her time of need, despite her feelings for him. When Korra was crying, feeling like the "worst Avatar ever"; Mako and Bolin were the ones trying to look for her along with Asami on Air Temple Island.
Mako tried to comfort her by telling her, Aang did not learn all the elements right away and that he, Bolin, and Asami had her back. The four later formed Team Avatar and started to patrol Republic City's streets in order to fight crime.
Before getting into the car when another police report aired from the Satomobile radio, Mako let Korra in first and smiled at each other in the car, much to Asami's displeasure. Later, when Mako, Bolin, and Asami were put into the police vehicle after defying Tarrlok; Mako darted Korra a sad look, which Korra returned with a sad expression, saying, "Tenzin will get you out".
The Legend of Korra 's brooding firebender Mako dated both Korra and Asami with a little overlap , but the series ends with Korra and Asami falling in love with one another and running away for a romantic vacation in the spirit world. Their relationship was left somewhat ambiguous in the actual show, with Korra and Asami simply holding hands and facing one another, but co-creator Bryan Konietzko posted a statement confirming " Korrasami is canon " a couple of days after the finale aired.
In his statement on Tumblr , Konietzko explained that he'd first started to bring up the idea of Korra and Asami getting together in the writers room during season 1. At first it wasn't discussed seriously, since they didn't think it was something they would be allowed to do in an animated show for a kids network.
Mako is somewhat like that, having lost his own parents to a firebender and ending up in a rather low position, living on the streets and fending for himself. To his credit, though, he didn't turn out to be a reckless vigilante who caused massive collateral damage. And he doesn't have a silly twig in his mouth, either. This is a rather subtle parallel, but it can be said that Mako's "cool under fire" method of pro bending is not unlike the similarly cool, disciplined fighting style of famed boxers like Muhammad Ali and Willie Pep.
Mako may bend fire, but he is not reckless or hotheaded like a young Zuko. He keeps this fists up and waits for the right moment to strike, and he's rather graceful on the battlefield, too. Mako is patient like an earthbender and flexible like a waterbender. It's easy to see how Mako is like Jet, but how is he like Katara?
These characters were born in different places and times, but they have some notable parallels. For one thing, they both lost family members to firebenders. In addition, Mako and Katara had siblings to rely on instead of their parents when growing up, and they have mementos of a family member scarf and necklace. If that weren't enough, they were both love interests to an avatar. It seems that Mako borrows a little something from everyone else, and the trend continues with General Iroh of the United Nations fleet.
Mako and General Iroh fought together against the Equalists, and got a good impression of each other. While the brothers were collecting bets at a pet shop, a fire ferret escaped and was restrained by its owner, Mr.
Feng , because it was to be fed to a pythonaconda. Mako stopped Bolin from buying it as they could not afford to feed it, and felt his younger brother needed to toughen up and realize that bigger animals consumed those smaller than them. Mako collected the owner's bet while Bolin talked to Toza about that night's match; the firebender chastised him because he believed that doing so would get them in trouble with Shady Shin.
Bolin angrily responded that Mako was being mean and walked away, leaving Mako to sigh. Mako saved Bolin from the pythonaconda. That night, after Bolin broke into the pet shop to steal the fire ferret, he was strangled by the pythonaconda, but Mako arrived and yanked the snake away. After again criticizing his brother for getting into stupid situations, the two left, but, at Bolin's urging, with the fire ferret whom the earthbender named Pabu.
Mako warned Bolin that Pabu's food would come out of half of his money. However, when Toza won and Bolin revealed that he had encouraged the pro-bender to not throw the match, Mako urged his brother to run from an irritated Shin. The brothers were eventually cornered by Shady Shin and two other gangsters and forced into the defensive until Toza helped bring the fight to a standstill and Zolt eventually broke it off completely.
Impressed with the brothers' abilities, Mako and Bolin were offered the chance by Toza to live at the gym and train under him to become pro-benders. While Bolin was immediately won over by the idea, Mako doubted and Shady Shin used this to appeal to the young firebender's pragmatic nature and point out that he needed to protect his younger brother.
Mako agreed with that assessment and used it as reasoning to take Toza's offer for a chance at a more honest life. When Bolin wanted to celebrate the abandonment of their criminal lives, Mako reminded him they had to save what little money they had at that point, though due to Bolin betting on a Boar-q-pine victory, they had more than enough to celebrate with.
Acknowledging the dangerous nature and moral ambiguity of their past, Mako was determined never to return to that life and explicitly forbade Bolin from associating with the Triple Threats in any way. Mako eventually became the captain of a pro-bending team, the Fire Ferrets , which included his brother and his friend Hasook. Mako and Korra infiltrated an Equalist rally.
However, when Hasook was a no-show on the last match, he was forced to allow Korra, a green player, to take the waterbender 's place. She eventually managed to help them win the match, and as such, a lasting partnership was formed.
They tracked the earthbender down to an abandoned warehouse , where they witnessed, first hand, Amon's ability to strip a bender of their bending abilities.
However, with Korra's help, Mako was able to rescue his brother before Amon reached him. Heading for the championship, the team needed funding to play, thus Mako got a job at Republic City Power Plant. When he returned home from work one day, Asami Sato nearly ran him over. To make it up to him, she took him to dinner at Kwong's Cuisine , marking the start of their relationship.
Due to this connection, Future Industries took care of the Fire Ferrets' monetary issues by sponsoring the team. The team started to train hard for the Pro-bending Championship, and although they had some hard matches due to internal romantic struggles, [19] they managed to reach the finale. However, after their match against the White Falls Wolfbats ended with their defeat due to cheating of the other team, Amon and his Equalists attacked the Pro-bending Arena , effectively destroying the building and leaving Mako and Bolin homeless.
Mako threatened an Equalist to get information about Korra 's location. To make an insecure Avatar feel better about herself, Mako formed a team with her and the others to actively do something about the Equalists in the city.
They were successful, though the team was broken up when an angered Tarrlok arrested Asami, and subsequently Mako and his brother as they came to the girl's defense. Together with Tenzin, they all set out on a frantic search for the Avatar, and when they found her again, Mako tenderly took care of her, despite being in a relationship with Asami. Mako blasted Amon with lightning for a momentary escape.
In the aftermath of finding Korra, Amon launched his grand attack on the city. Mako and his friends fought back for a while, but the sheer number and power of the Equalists forced them on the run. The foursome retreated into the tunnel system of the city, where they would await the arrival of reinforcements in the form of General Iroh and his United Forces.
However, after General Iroh too proved to be no match for the Equalists machines , Mako set out with Korra to confront Amon. After having learned that he truly was a waterbender from the Northern Water Tribe , [25] they eventually found him at the Pro-bending Arena, where he was holding a victory speech.
They freed Tenzin and his children, though when they were faced by Amon, the Equalist leader managed to take away Korra's bending. When Amon moved to do the same to Mako, the firebender managed to temporarily overpower Amon, and run away with Korra. However, he was stopped by Amon and was on the verge of losing his bending, when Korra saved him with her newly unlocked airbending.
When it became clear that the old healer was unable to and a heartbroken Korra ran off to grieve on her own, Mako confessed his love to her, though was shot down.
Unsure what to do, he followed her and witnessed how she got her bending back, after which she confessed her love for him too and they began their relationship. Korra and Mako attempted to fight off Unalaq in order to secure their escape. As Korra traveled south to attend the Glacier Spirits Festival , he accompanied his girlfriend, though as tensions rose between Korra and her father, Mako found that being the Avatar's boyfriend was not always that easy.
After she broke with Tenzin and started her spiritual training under Unalaq, [4] Mako accompanied her on her journey toward the South Pole , where she opened the Southern spirit portal.
Returning to the Southern Water Tribe to find it overrun with Northern Water Tribe soldiers, [27] Mako was forced to sit by helplessly as he watched Tonraq and several other Southerners be sentenced to life imprisonment for their attempt to kidnap Unalaq.
Although he cautioned Korra that freeing her father from prison would mean the start of a Water Tribe Civil War , he helped her do it nonetheless.
Upon returning to Republic City, Mako resumed his duties as a police officer and when everyone was quick to blame the Northern Water Tribe for the bombing of the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center , he had his doubts and he started an investigation on his own. Due to maintaining a more distanced view on the brewing conflict between the Water Tribes , Mako soon found himself having relationship troubles with Korra and after he revealed her plans to ask the United Forces fleet for help behind President Raiko 's back to the president, they broke up.
Mako was arrested after Lu and Gang found incriminating evidence in his apartment. Determined to arrest the true culprits of the bombing and help Asami's company the same time, Mako set up a sting operation with the help of the Triple Threat Triad. However, the gangsters ended up double-crossing them and Asami's warehouse was robbed clean while they were being kept busy.
While he consoled her, Mako was surprised when Asami kissed him. After the businessman was arrested for the attempted kidnapping of President Raiko , Mako was released from prison.
In an attempt to prevent Unalaq from merging with Vaatu , Mako and Bolin fought him outside the Southern spirit portal. Mako accompanied Korra and the rest of Team Avatar toward the Southern Water Tribe in an attempt to break through the Northern forces guarding the Southern spirit portal and get into the Spirit World.
Together with Asami and Bolin, he served as a decoy, though they were eventually captured. Shortly after Harmonic Convergence, Mako rejoined the Fire Ferrets and took part in a charity championship organized to help rebuild the city following the damages caused by the Unalaq Crisis.
They were ultimately able to win the event by beating the White Falls Wolfbats in the finale. Being reminded of how he used to be, Mako was doubtful about Kai 's sincerity. Although his apartment was in ruins, Mako declined Tenzin's offer to stay at Air Temple Island and resided at the police headquarters instead. As such, he was the first to respond to a call about Daw , a new airbender, roaming the city and broke the news of the resurfacing airbenders to Tenzin. When initial attempts to persuade some new benders to move to the Northern Air Temple in order to learn the ways of the Air Nomads , Mako reluctantly participated in an "air show" to excite the new benders about their new abilities, which attracted Kai to join them.
Mako gave his signature scarf to his grandmother before warmly hugging her. Not long after the team's arrival in Ba Sing Se , Kai ran away from the group, returning to his thieving ways, which prompted Mako and Bolin to give chase, though Kai managed to get them stranded in the Lower Ring by stealing their money. Spending the night on the streets, the brothers tried to find their way back to the Upper Ring , though they ended up finding their paternal family instead.
When they inquired about new airbenders in the city, Chow and Tu told them there was a rumor that Earth Queen Hou-Ting was retaining them for experimental purposes.
Mako and the others soon decided that they would not leave Ba Sing Se before having freed the airbenders, even though the Queen had ordered them to leave. Eventually discovering that the airbenders were held captive underneath the Earth Queen's Temple , the team infiltrated the building that night.
After finding him, they fought off several Dai Li agents and making it to the surface, they spotting Korra and Tenzin coming to them on Oogi. Safely escaping the city, the airbenders headed for the Northern Air Temple, while Mako joined his friends and Lin to continue the search for other airbenders in Lin's airship.
The group made their way to Zaofu, home to the Metal Clan , where they met Suyin Beifong and her family. Facing the four criminals with Zaofu's guard and the rest of Team Avatar, he managed to surround the foursome, only for Ghazan to separate the groups with a pool of lava. As the Beifong sisters drop down from the ceiling to reach Korra, Mako provided cover fire in order to give Bolin the opportunity to stun P'Li 's combustionbending by hitting her on her third eye with a small pebble.
Despite managing to save Korra, however, they failed to apprehend the group. Bolin and Team Avatar discovered a hidden room behind a bookshelf in Aiwei 's house. The following morning, Mako and the others set out to investigate how the breach in security could have occurred, a search that eventually led them to suspect the city's resident truth seer, Aiwei , as he was the only one who could tell a lie and be believed. Searching his home, the team discovered a secret room, though before they could investigate, Aiwei returned home and deduced Team Avatar's intentions; he managed to escape the city and nearly blew Team Avatar up in the process.
