For a young Dun, it made watching movies like The Terminator quite confusing. By the time he was a teenager, Dun was rebelling hard. I never got into drugs or alcohol, but I would yell at my parents and just treat them terribly. Everything was an argument. Looking back, they were trying their best. Joseph disagrees. You want to take the chicken-sized horses all day long. You just kick them right in the snout. Dude, just picture the beak on a horse-sized chicken. Joseph had taught himself piano by playing along to Beatles and Dion songs on the radio, impressing friends with how quickly he learned, and forming an early version of Twenty One Pilots with two friends.
Dun first saw them at a club on the Ohio State campus. By , Joseph had grown into a ferocious performer, climbing the scaffolding and diving into audiences. To finish off the song, Joseph tore off his mask and leaped off the stage, only to return minutes later. Both Joseph and Dun brought lots of energy to their performances—Joseph climbed onto elevated surfaces and jumped off them multiple times during the show, prompting hordes of fans on the floor and in the seats to sing along to every single lyric.
Joseph and Dun continued the intense passion demonstrated by the first two songs, and the crowd responded to and played up everything that the duo did on stage. Formed in by high school friends Tyler Joseph , Nick Thomas , and Chris Salih , Twenty One Pilots built an enormous regional following across Ohio and the Midwest, spurred on by constant and energetic touring, shrewd use of interactive social media, and connecting with fans on a grassroots level.
